This Gyokuro shade-grown green tea consists of finely shaded tea leaves from the prestigious region of Kyoto, Japan. This high-grade organic Asatsuyu Gyokuro offers a unique flavor compared to standard shade-grown green tea. In particular, Kotobuki Gyokuro is aromatic with a smooth, rich umami taste and a sweetness that lingers in your mouth.

Gyokuro green tea grows in the shade for 20 days before harvest. This unique harvesting process produces a jade-colored tea rich in nutrients. Shade-grown green tea is especially high in natural caffeine. Even in Japan, Gyokuro is considered a rare green tea.

For a delicious cup, the trick is to brew the Gyokuro slowly and at a low temperature in order to get the full flavor of the tea. When brewed at a high temperature, the bitterness and astringency of the catechins and caffeine will become stronger.

Gyokuro Brewing Instructions

  1. Heat fresh, filtered water until boiled.
  2. Pour water into cups to warm the cup and cool down the water. You can also use a yuzamashi water cooler.
  3. Pour water over the tea leaves. Recommended water temperature for high-grade Gyokuro is 122°F (45°C)-140°F (50°C). Try different brew times and temperatures to find your preference.
  4. Steep for 1.5-3 minutes. All of our teas can be steeped up to 3 times.

Kooridashi Ice Brewed Gyokuro Instructions

  1. Put the tea leaves in a kyusu or teapot (with a capacity of 500-700ml) without a tea strainer and spread thinly for easy extraction.*Using a tea strainer is not recommended, as the extracted tea may get lukewarm over time at room temperature. If you would like to use a tea strainer, we would encourage you to leave the ice to melt in the fridge overnight.
  2. Put the ice directly on top of the tea leaves. We recommend using ice made from filtered water or mineral water for a more delicious flavor.
  3. Leave the teapot at room temperature for 4 to 5 hours or leave it in the fridge overnight. After the ice melts (it’s okay if the ice is not completely melted), shake it gently to even out the tea extract. Pour into the cup(s). Enjoy the beautiful green color and wonderful umami flavor!

Delighted to have this divine tea of the spring I am so happy to find this tea on Amazon. I know small businesses prefer direct so I have thus moved on to purchasing directly from Senbird. It is an extremely high-quality Japanese green tea. It was expensive, but it was worth it. I won’t throw away the tea leaves after I drink the tea. You can mix the leftover leaves in a bowl of carefully made Japanese rice, and add a few drops of soy sauce. Just think about the colors…

Delicate and delicious Excellent quality for the cost. This delicate and delicious green tea is a treat in the morning and throughout the day. Be attentive to the temperature of the water when brewing. You don’t want to add water that is too hot. It will ruin the delicate flavors of the tea. I love this gyokuro

The best green tea leaves I’ve ever had. The gyokuro reminds me of the time I went to Kyoto👌.

I had always been looking for a replacement for coffee since it doesn’t sit well with my stomach and I’m really glad that I had found this brand of tea. I had tried out maeda-en’s gyokuro tea, but it didn’t give me nearly the same amount of caffeine, green tea flavor, and color vibrancy as this brand of tea does. Also, the can is reusable if you decide to buy more tea leaves!

If you’re looking for a caffeine boost, this is it. If you need a reason to try out this tea, look no further. I had received my tea can during the evening time, and I was so excited to try it out that I had made 2 cups before I went to bed around 10pm. I ended up staying awake until almost 6am the next morning and I had to be up for work in about an hour. Amazing Gyokuro

I have really enjoyed this gyokuro. As others have commented, this gyokuro is packed with umami! No astringency and pull either. Each steeping is a new experience. One of my favorites!

Hard to describe this gyokuro which has a slightly vegetal flavored cup which is delightful. I feel really good after drinking a cup 🙂

I am relatively new to drinking real tea, not what you find in the grocery store. So far I have tried the Sencha and the Gyokuro. They are both very good.

I have purchased Japanese green tea directly from Japan before, but the shipping can be a bit of a nuisance. So, I was pleased to find Senbird. Now that I’ve been enjoying their delicious gyokuro for the past several mornings, I can say I’m delighted with the quality. Such a great find. I plan to be a repeat customer and am eager to try their other teas, as well. I just wish they had a larger quantity product.

This review does not reflect on the great service and selection of Senbird. It is just my opinion of the gyokuro tea. Unfortunately I didn’t like it. The tea has a light seaweed taste. I’ll stick to Genmaicha, Sencha, hojicha. Those taste great!

I love this deep and incredibly smooth gyokuro. Senbird’s gyokuro has more layers of flavor compared to others I’ve purchased. I can’t say enough about the great customer service and fast shipping.

This tea is outstanding. I haven’t had a tea like this since I visited family abroad in Japan. It’s got a beautifully delicate but vibrant green color – not brown or yellow like other green teas. It’s got such a nice rich flavor and grassy almost toasty smell. Not just flat and grassy. Will be ordering again!

This is the second type of tea ordered from Senbird. This tea is refreshing and energizing in a very different way from other teas. Very floral and the taste is delicious. Brews to a beautiful green color. I make four steeps from 1 tsp and the taste and effect are good to the last.

I love this gyokuro! You can definitely tell the quality from the richness of the flavor. My first item from Senbird and I can’t wait to try more!

I like this gyokuro very much. It is the tea I have been drinking every morning. Flavor is strong but not overwhelming, and it’s noticeably sweeter than other gyokuro teas I have tried.

Taste of Japan. It is so nice to know that real Japanese tea is available to get. I was in Japan more than 20 years ago, this tea really reminded me of the great time I had and wonderful Japanese people I met. Little card of thank you was included in the package which represents the integrity of Japanese people who run the business. Very vivid green color is so beautiful. I can feel high in caffeine as it stayed me up all night. Thank you.
