Description

This Tetsubin kettle features a modern, elegant design with a curved edge around the lid for no spillage. Handcrafted by Japanese artisans with a 900 year history of iron work, this kettle features a porcelain enamel interior for a glass-like finish that aids in heat retention. The iron naturally interacts with the water, further enhancing the flavor of your tea. The kettle has a smooth, large iron handle that can be folded for easy storage.

A tetsubin is a Japanese cast iron teapot, or tea kettle, which is a traditional part of the Japanese tea ceremony, chanoyu. Historically, the tetsubin was used to heat water over charcoal for preparation of matcha, but nowadays, tetsubins are commonly used for brewing tea. If desired, this kettle can be used over open flame. However, recommended usage is to keep liquid warm, especially for adjusting temperature of boiled water or just steeping tea.

The Crafting Process:

Carrying on traditional craftsmanship practices, the kettle design is first drawn by hand. Afterwards, a hand-carved prototype is made from gypsum and used as a base to create a mold for pouring iron. With deep concentration and focus on pour speed and volume, the artisan then hand pours iron, melted at 2,800°F, into the mold. Lastly, the iron pot is carefully hand-carved and refined into perfectly smooth curves and edges.

Care Instructions:

  • To clean, simply rinse with warm water before use
  • Prevent scratches from scrubbing by wiping with a soft, clean cloth to remove any stains
  • Do not wash in dishwasher
