How TO BREW Matcha?

Step 1

Place 2 chashaku (matcha spoon) or 1 teaspoon of matcha (2g) into the chawan (tea bowl). If a more mellow flavor is desired, we recommend sifting the matcha to remove any lumps.

Note: this is the standard way to drink matcha, also known as usucha. The tea ceremony preparation results in koicha, which uses only high-grade matcha that brews a thick and strong matcha without foam on top.

Step 2

Pour 70ml (2.46fl oz) of hot water over the matcha in the chawan bowl.

Recommended water temperature for matcha is 176°F (80°C).

Step 3

Whisk the matcha in a ‘W’ motion with a chasen (bamboo whisk) until it has a rich foam on top.

Step 4

After whisking, drink the matcha right away, when it is fresh and covered in foam. Waiting too long will cause the foam will vanish and matcha powder to collect at the bottom. Enjoy!
