At a Glance
Grown in the misty hills of Shizuoka, Honoka is a rare Japanese black tea (wakoucha) made from first flush tea leaves. Crafted with the traditional Japanese cultivar Benifuuki, it offers a mellow sweetness, smooth body, and gentle astringency, distinct from black teas found elsewhere.
The name Honoka (ほのか), meaning “faint glow,” reflects the tea’s comforting character. With notes of warm cacao, toasted grain, and soft malt, each sip feels like a soft blanket around your senses—deep, grounding, and quietly uplifting. Naturally rich in antioxidants with a moderate caffeine lift, Wakoucha Honoka supports calm focus, perfect for reading, journaling, or unwinding after a long day.

和紅茶の淹れ方
HOW TO BREW WAKOUCHA
1 | Heat fresh, filtered water until boiled. Let cool very slightly — water close to 203°F (95°C) is ideal for bringing out the fragrance and flavor in Wakoucha.
2 | Pour water over 1 tablespoon of tea leaves per cup.
3 | Steep for 1-2 minutes. All of our teas can be steeped up to 3 times.
FOR ICED WAKOUCHA:
Simply add the desired amount of Wakoucha tea leaves into a container or bottle and pour in boiling water. Let the tea steep and cool down before putting it in the fridge to chill. After 2 hours, the cold brew Wakoucha is ready. Cold tea lasts in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
For a more mellow flavor, add water to your desired amount of Wakoucha tea leaves and let steep in the fridge for 3 hours before drinking.
We just returned from a Japan trip spending time on Kyushu, in particular in Fukuoka. Yame is a town and area famous (but not well known) for teas and for producing wakoucha or Japanese black tea. Wakoucha is not a well known tea within Japan and it’s difficult to find. We did find some locally grown in Yame and found another (Benifuki) when in Kanazawa further north. Mild tasting teas with sweet aroma and low caffeine which appeals to us as an option to all the other green, black and puerh teas we consume.
I was pleasantly surprised to come across this wakoucha from Senbird Tea and brewed a few cups as recommended. It’s important to follow their brewing instructions as you don’t want your water too hot or steeping time too long. The result is very satisfying with a fullness in the mouth feel and as the tea cools the sweetness increases.
A subtle tea and one worth trying if you’ve not had it before. It’s also a good value for this type of tea. Give it a try.
Very good quality and reliable taste! We love it!
I was excited to see that Senbird had added a black tea to their wonderful collection of teas. Upon arrival, I wasted no time in trying it. I found this tea to be less astringent than other black teas I've tried, and the tasting notes described on the website were totally in line with my experience. Another winner from Sendbird!
I picked up my first batch of this Wakoucha tea this week -- and have to say it's my new favorite black tea! The flavor is soooo mellow and relaxing.
Can't recommend this one enough.
This is a great tea, similar to a Chinese Red Tea I think. It's a deep red color with a malty aroma.
